Randomly writing....

Through the drought stricken land and at time of writing we have experienced some glorious rain!! I am so grateful!
The land is being ravished and scorched. The farmers are really bearing the brunt of mother nature's cruel ways. I have taken notice of this on many of my training rides lately and even though some of my photos taken depict a rather green and lush landscape at times, this is taken in very isolated relative areas.
However, we are called to improvise and being on water restrictions imposed over the past few days and knowing it is here to stay until there is sufficient reprieve, we are still more fortunate than some.

I have started to do some new requests as well as followups on companies and people I have approached to assist me in my cause and that is to raise money for deaf kids attending a worthwhile institution, the Carel du Toit Center in Cape Town. For this I will also be attempting the 2016 Freedom Challenge race across South Africa taking one on a 2300km journey, non stop through some of the remote places in the country. My Cause is moving along slowly and as I am well aware we are staring at and facing a possible uncertain 2016 year economically with that and all happening around us. I still believe though that we should all try look past our strife and stress and the continual bombardment of negative images and news clips that threaten to drag us down and gel us into a negative plastic ball that some may already find themselves in. I believe we as humans are much more than we think we are. I believe we all have the ability to offer something, to give something. I believe we all have the ability to hope as well as we have the ability to also dream!

I believe South Africa is hurting. A democracy that many are questioning after 22 years. I believe that the majority of our people of all races, colour and creed have hope and seek peace. Who in their right mind would want violence? Who wishes for deception? I believe many wish for more tolerance over intolerance. More peace over violence. More honesty over greed. People just want to be understood, people just want peace and harmony. I believe those willing to assist and be part of something such as what I may be doing will find peace within and harmony from willingly and wanting to help make a difference.

A previous recent training ride through parts of our "rural back yard" took us through some rural villages. We have become so brainwashed with negative aspects of our country namely crime for one, that it has become so easy to be paranoid and distrustful. Yet, when passing through these villages we received nothing but friendliness and smiles from the locals and it sort of restores your faith a little in humankind.

The Carel du Toit Center in Cape Town relies on assistance from "outside" to continue to do what they do and that is making a difference in every deaf child's life of all races attending this school, giving them an equal opportunity in their journey through life.

Big or small, it feels good to make that difference! I'm looking for more 'recruits to join me on this journey, not necessarily on a mountain bike but in any way that is of purpose!

Training, sleeping, working, family time, chores, resting, eating, planning, thinking, dreaming, learning, experimenting and just plain living is how I'm rolling at the moment!

All is still wrapped in a bubble of positive energy as the year starts rolling out before me. Sure as any may have it, there might be a tweak of negative energy trying to sneak through the armors once in a while. The Freedom Challenge is still firmly in my focused mind, my subconsciousness, my dreaming as well as my reality. Training has been good to me up to now and I have been blessed with good health other than a serious head cold that I managed to shake off in three days just after New Year. Just this morning for the first time, I rolled over and went back to sleep after the alarm went off merely because I was content with the fact that I am not a machine and my body was crying for rest of which I responded and gave it another two hours of extra sleep. Wisdom attained over the years have told me it is the right thing to do! Recovery from any over training cannot be shaken off with a pill or a magic potion! It can cost you more than that, physically and mentally.

Training this time around is going so well at present that just past Sunday on my ride I was feeling spiritual and thanking my Maker again while I was out for the blessings of feeling really good, feeling fit and feeling strong. Yet, there is still work to do and like a fine wine, it matures as time moves through it. My goal and wish is that on that start line, I will be able to say I am positively, physically and mentally ready for the challenge that will lie ahead! Even more than I was in 2014!

Another donation was handed over towards my cause in raising funds, over January, towards the Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town where Deaf children are taught to speak. This cause is still at the very forefront of my ideal and am hoping to have more positive responses over the next five months! A revisit and approach towards those that have pledged some support as well as seeking new donors is ongoing.

I spoke to a gentleman I had met more than once fairly recently and we had some discussions about making a difference as individuals. It was heartening and indulging to be in conversation with someone who practically shared the same outlook to life. It was also humbling to be informed that I was an inspiration. It just makes you feel like you doing something right!

Making a difference is inspiring, its motivating and its humbling! Making a difference about something other than ourselves is what I believe we are here for! I pray, I hope and remain positive that there will be others who will come forward and join me in making the difference I wish for towards the Carel du Toit Centre. I take no credits but believe all involved in my journey and ideals going forward deserve this!

My dream and request is to all those reading through this blog will spread the word and share with many as possible as well as follow the social links and help me get much needed exposure over and above the small network I have.

So with the New Year 2016, it brings new dawns, new days and hopefully new ways! I am not one for New Year resolutions but would rather concentrate on new goals for the days, weeks and months that lie ahead. Resolution is a formal expression of opinion or intention. A goal is an aim and achievement that has a start and an end. It is decisive.

Yes! I am the quiet, unsuspecting maybe sometimes shy guy. My hearing loss from birth has been part of that molding pretty much my whole life but having said that, I was always up for a challenge whenever it presented itself. I have in the past, over the six years made the transition from road biking into mountain biking and have pretty much trained on my own. I did this not because I felt I was better than anyone else, but rather I started to enjoy my own company. I started to look at how I could push my own boundaries on the basis that I was starting to lean into the enjoyment of endurance cycling. I have never felt the need to prove anything to anyone but rather only to myself if I felt the need to. I’m at a stage in my life after twenty plus years of cycling where I am enjoying it on a different level and where I have committed to take on a challenge, I set my heart on it.

Sure! I have had failures, but failures in life don’t determine who you are. What determines you is what you do with that failure. Whether you determine to conquer that failure by trying again or just letting it be but it doesn’t affect those around you but rather it affects you as an individual whichever way you choose to allow it to.

As I’ve got older, what seems to work for me is gratitude! Sometimes in failure we need to be grateful for the failures too. It has that power and can sometimes define you. Gratitude is sometimes hard to work on but it is possible to practice. I have those close to me that have always taken the time to find out more about me and that know my passions, my fears, my journey, my story and offer me the respect, support and understanding. For them, I am most grateful! I am also grateful I have the opportunity to try do something for others:

The Freedom Challenge race across South Africa 2016, a race I dreamed of doing back in 2009, attempted in 2014 deriving a massive learning curve from the failed attempt and now going back to finish the ‘business I started this year, does still come with its butterflies and nervous anticipation.

I am so looking forward to 2016 even though I know it could be a potentially tough year for many. My mind is focused, my goal is clearer and the past experiences are my lessons as I trudge the next five months of training. The biggest thing I know and as quoted from the Freedom Challenge advisory;

‘Due to the nature of the terrain and time of year, the Race across South Africa is a physically and mentally demanding undertaking – to complete this challenge, riders need to be adequately trained, equipped and prepared.’

-          So, I know what I’m training for…
